Review of Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) by Sean M — 07 Jul 2010
Close Encounters reminds me of how much science fiction movies, and films in general, have regressed. This is a genuinely creepy and mystifying movie with some really impressive sound and visuals. Except for a few shots, the special effects hold up really well.
But instead of hammering us with special effects, weâ??re only treated to small glimpses until the very end. This movie has what you call pacing and balance. If this movie were released today it would be all about the special effects, but back in 1977 it was all about the wonder and an actual character-driven story.
The ending is one of the most bewildering finales Iâ??ve ever seen in a movie.
