Review of Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) by Joe G — 14 Feb 2011
A semi-quirky, semi-depressing film, Close Encounters (I C wat U did Thar) gives an interesting commentary on the modern family (or lack there of) while also having the intriguing premise of "what if the crazies who say they've seen aliens were telling the truth?".
The special effects were pretty amazing at times, with exception of the aliens themselves, which turn out to be a big let down after seeing their beautiful flying miniatures (I mean ships). Actually, that's generally my biggest complaint of this film, it's a bit of a letdown.
The mystery behind Dreyfuss's "sculptures" is predictable and bland, lacking the "Ah hah!" factor it was going for. I don't think the military scene's were needed, as they often slowed the pace and ultimately only serve as another hurtle for the protagonist to overcome.
Finally, while Dreyfuss and Dillon do a great job in their roles (as do everyone else), I ended up not caring about them at all. Are we supposed to, after they show how little they care about or protect those that love them? Even saying all that, it was still a pretty entertaining movie that's worth checking out once, I just doubt I'll ever watch it again.
