Review of Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) by Ben N — 19 Apr 2011
More subtle, thought-provoking, and poetic then general sci-fi fare, Close Encounters is a moving and beautiful depiction of human contact with other-worldly life. Given that virtually all other aliens in cinema up to this point were war-mongering tyrants, the approach used here is both refreshing and awe-inspiring.
Making all other alien flicks seem cliche'd and immature, Spielberg's first go at extraterrestrial creatures is an artistic experience. It's a shame that his later alien flicks didn't meet this standard.
