Review of Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) by Ryan M — 06 Sep 2011
Re-watching this recently, I found it more action-oriented and less comedic than I remembered it. It may be that I focused on the lighter touches when I was younger. This SF thriller is actually more intense that I had recalled, with its tale of alien abduction and government cover-up.
Spielberg keeps the pace moving, although it seems slower now than modern movies. Dreyfuss anchors the film with his portrayal of a man who knows he's in the grip of powers beyond his control and just wants some answers.
The Devil's Tower scenes are still spectacular, and this is one of John Williams's most evocative scores.
