Review of Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) by Tristan D — 18 Mar 2012
I was profoundly let down by this film in one core respect: As brilliant as it admittedly is thematically, I never felt for one moment that anything in it mattered. I didn't care about Dreyfuss's character or his dilemma, and through this failure to inspire any empathy the rest of it stopped being intriguing and simply annoyed me.
The alien reveal is fantastic, as is the idea to not have them want to kill the humans or lay eggs in them or anything else that movie aliens usually do, but I just felt apathetic and therefore underwhelmed.
