According to Imdb: Steven Spielberg and Richard Dreyfuss were approached to direct and star in the sequel (Jaws 2) but production on Close Encounters of the Third Kind was running behind and they declined to participate.
After Seeing ''Close Encounters", I fail to see what all the hype is about. The plot seemed to drag on in a lot of areas and the ending seemed absolutely lackluster and demented. In retrospect, I honestly think Spielberg and Dreyfuss should've agreed to Jaws 2 instead, since it would've improved the sequel's quality.
