Review of Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) by Alastair H — 19 Oct 2013
A sci-fi classic and one of Spielberg's best. Looking back on the film now you can see many of the hallmarks that would become classic Spielberg - space, aliens, troubled families, sentimental and uplifting ending, awesome John Williams score and a religious undertone hidden beneath the sci-fi dressing.
I adore this film and feel it is one that everyone should watch at least once in their lives. It has dated now of course but the story of a man who becomes lost and confused on Earth and finally finds an answer from these beings from space is still engaging. My only small nit-pick is that when Roy enters the mothership he leaves his family behind on Earth but there was no closure given to that part of his life that he is leaving. Spielberg has stated he would change that if he were making the film today. (19.10.13).
