Review of Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) by Brett H — 26 Jan 2014
Definitely a product of it's time, and while the special effects are still amazing today, the pace and lack of answers really frustrated me. There is an element that's fresh here; aliens being friendly, but they never give you more than that, so you're left wondering how all the events connect from a to b.
Another issue I found was the characters are all pretty unlikable and I had a hard time caring about their day-to-day lives. There are some truly amazing moments here, like the first encounter with the aliens and the entire climax with the mothership, but in a way, I have the same reaction with 2001: A Space Odyssey.
It's considered a Spielberg classic, but I just can't wrap my head around everyone's love for it.
