Review of Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) by Steve S — 26 May 2010
***1/2 (out of four).
What a concept for a film. The idea that aliens might not be all that interested in attacking us should they ever land on planet Earth. Maybe they are actually here to learn about us, and perhaps we wouldn't acually know the reasons they are here.
Richard Dreyfuss is a city worker in Muncie, Indiana. When power begins failing he is given the job of checking out the grid. While out on the road he has an encounter with a flying saucer. He becomes obsessed with finding out what is going on. is trek leds him to Devil's Tower in Wyoming.
I like how the film's main conflict is the characters coming to a realization and their attempts at gaining the knowledge behind the alien visitations. I think we have become used to alien movies being about blowing things up. Spielberg's direction is flawless, though a bit self-indulgent. But that is also one of his strengths. He throws everything at us with great detail. Not to mention the score is one of the most recognizable in movie history.
