Sci-fi is not really my type of genre, generally speaking. But this very cultish sci-fi movie by Spielberg rather focus on the human aspect of extraterrestial phenomen, while we follow the government with their attemps to conceal it from the public eye, what's going on. The story unfolds very well, and it keeps your interest all the way through.

Richard Dreyfuss plays Roy Neary, an ordinairy family man who happen to bewitness flying saucers really close, one evening. With nothing to prove what he saw, except from a strange burn in his face, it's impossible to convince his wife. He cannot drop it (of course) but his wife gets enough of his "madness" and leaves with her children after Roy's been humming a strange five-note tune frenetically and been building a model of dirt. He cannot explain where he gets these impulses from. When he meets a woman who also was present at the time the flying saucers were showing, who lost her daughter mysteriously during the time, he starts to put two and two together.

When he learns that the government is evacuating people from an area with a mountainous plateau, he knows where to go.

Don't expect any spectacular special effects, after all, it's made in 1977! But it's very advanced effects for it's time.

World famous film director Francois Truffaut (Les Quatre Cents Coups, Tirez Sur Le Pianiste, Jules Et Jim, Fahrenheit 451, Le Dernier Metro, among others...) has a small but important role in this movie.

The scenes towards the ending, is absolutely impressive and touching.
