Close Encounters is a Spielberg sci-fi thriller with astonishing special effects and much like all his other sci-fi films, this one has a dark setting and atmosphere and this is from where Kubrick could have derived Jack Nicholson's character from The Shining(1980). This isn't just your average PG-13 film and you don't get to see things like this these days. The film's long silences and spiritual treatment resemble Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. However, Melinda Dillon's stale performance ruins the film of much of it's moments.
