Review of Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) by Alvin T — 16 May 2011
How epic scale aliens movies started, well, this is the one that started it all, Spielberg flagship alien movie may be E.T, but this is the one that kickstart it all, this is the daddy of the Hollywood alien movies.
Although the modern aliens movies are violent, and shoots you without question, even Spielberg himself made a movie about violent aliens. But Close Encounters is definitely something else, all the little bits of this movie, the main 5 tones theme, the famous sculpture, the default alien look we see these days, it all comes from here.
Close Encounters is definitely the pinnacle of cultural shaping, many movies can be seen getting inspiration from here, from the colorful spaceships, to the humanois big eye looking aliens, even the recent film Paul also pays tribute to this masterful work.
Close Encounter maybe a little eclipse by Star Wars at the time of release, but it is two different kinds of movies, Close Encounters is more for the ultimare experience, and for the ultimate feeling of "not knowing what's gonna happen next".
This is definitely a masterpiece. Steven Spielberg truly is the master of storytelling and the person who shape our modern culture.
Highly Recommended.
