Review of Clockers (1995) by Paul P — 08 Nov 2011
Spike has done a pretty good job with this flick. It looks and feels incredibly genuine and realistic and I like the fact that numerous points of view are offered without making any judgements.
The story is nicely paced and layered and it tackles it's subject intelligently which is a refreshing change. It also helps that the cast are excellent. Harvey underplays nicely, only letting rip once in a while and Mekhi takes a very tricky role and makes you empathise for a dude who doesn't really deserve our concern. The standout for me was Delroy Lindo. The guy is chillingly good here. His scene with Mekhi where he reveals his true colours was excellently executed.
Spike's "Joints" are usually very personal affairs and this is no exception, I like the way he tells his stories and how he draws you in.
Fine work once again from Mr Lee and whilst this isn't at the level of 25th Hour (Not much is though, to be fair), this is a very effective and affecting piece of film making.
