Review of Cliffhanger (1993) by James S — 24 Dec 2008
"You want to kill me don't you Tucker?...well take a number and get in line".
Yes, this is a the kind of movie where the bad guy has lines like that. John Lithgow's high jacker is more pantomime villain than psychopath but in a movie where everything is deliberately larger than life, it's hardly a surprise.
After a sweat drenching opening scene the film becomes a rather pedestrian and plodding cat and mouse movie. Stallone has the muscles to handle this kind of movie but scarcely the talent and though some of the aerial shots are breathtaking it's never quite enough to distract from the awful script, wooden performances, slow plotting and that fact that they're sometimes using blue screen.
Made at the time when every action movie was a rip off of Die Hard, just set in a different location, Die Hard 2 director Harlin shows that he doesn;t really have it when not backed up by Bruce Willis and the rest of the cast don't help matters much either.
Predictable and uninspiring, considering it's moniker, there is very little to keep you on the edge of you seat here.
