Review of Clerks II (2006) by Daniel H — 13 Feb 2010
Smith returns to the Quick Stop and shows just what the last 10 years has done for Dante and Randal in this confident, funny, yet minimal sequel to his original groundbreaking film.
I really wasn't sure I'd enjoy this movie, but within minutes Kevin Smith's grasp of vivid dialogue, real people and staggering vulgarity won me over...again!! A difficult balance which almost up ends at one point, but he and the small superb cast ultimately deliver.
Amidst all the weary cynicism there's plenty of real heart and a true optimism which his work never gets enough credit for. With Clerks 2, Smith comes full circle, but unlike our two heroes it's clear how far he's grown in the interim. Of course if you don't enjoy his work, it's unlikely to change your mind.
