Review of Clerks (1994) by Jerome K — 11 Nov 2011
Strictly speaking, I can't give this film a high rating, no matter how much some people may love this film. Yes, it was made on a very small budget from an aspiring director, but I'm judging it against other films as a whole.
Shot in black and white, you can tell the camera they used wasn't of very good quality, and the lighting and editing could have used a little more work. It's main pitfall are really it's actors (or really lack thereof), because you can tell they had no real experience due to their lack of timing and emoting.
I could swear sometimes they were just reading off cue cards. Getting past the horrible acting, however, is a solid script that really makes it stand out. This story about a day in the life of a store clerk is so sullenly depressing, it's funny.
It's also vulgar, sassy, and yet very real at the same time. I guess, in the end, you just have to appreciate it for what it is: an amateurish film with enough comedic gems that allowed Kevin Smith to garner a cult following.
