Review of Clerks (1994) by Jj M — 11 Dec 2011
Yes, there is no accounting for people's tastes. That's why everyone deserves the right to be independent and judge things as they see them, e.g. the majority of people in Syria have had a taste for change of government for a while now and deserve to be able to judge a new government once it's put in place, just like most westernised countries have the privelidge of.
Current affairs aside, in terms of this film, Clerks has earned cult status not because of fanboys or critical acknowledgment of those who haven't seen it. It is mainly because it was original. It was also associated with the early nineties slacker culture. If you were part of it, you'd understand how important this film was to that generation. The fact that it was made with a quirky vision and fresh independent style by a completely unknown director is also a fairly good reason why it has since deserved cult status.
For people who understand movies, I would recommend. For those who don't, I would enthuse them not to bother watching.
