Review of Clerks (1994) by Brian C — 31 May 2012
The movie that made me want to make movies. Very funny with priceless dialogue and characters who seem more like old friends the more you see it. It's raw, poorly acted, shoddily written, and looks horrible, but considering what went into it, these end up being qualities rather than deterrents.
How many other movies made on this budget end up with such presence and personality? It's the mind of its determined creator, unbiased, and unashamed of what he finds amusing and wants to depict whether people like it or not, and despite the shoddy writing, the dialogue is intelligent, hilarious, endlessly quotable, and often downright insightful.
Stagy acting aside, I couldn't see anyone else as Dante, Randal, or any of the nuts they run across throughout their surreal day. The movie is fun and entertaining in itself, but the story behind it rubs off on the final product, making it more than it actually is.
I will always love Clerks, until the day I die. I wouldn't be the film nut I am now without it, and it's the reason I still hold on to my pipe dream of wanting to make films for myself.
