Review of Clerks (1994) by Damjan R — 31 Jul 2012
Well it's no 'Citizen Kane' let me tell you, and that's OK, because it's more of a symbol for a new time in film that got ushered in with the 90s, and that is the new independent era.
Smith and many of his peers made smallish movies for virtually no money by any Hollywood standards, and what came of it, was in my opinion a movement that has uprooted the system of yesteryear. Is it any good? In a word, well, depends on what you like.
The writing is pretty good, and the actors sometimes hold it back, but sometimes the words overwhelm the message that could have been made visually. Its visual style is sparse to say the least, but then again its dictated by the extreme poverty in which it was made.
The talent is there, but it won't be until Chasing Amy that Smith really finds his groove. It's infinitely quotable with great stuff in there, but it's shortcomings are notable upon multiple viewings, but as debuts go, it's a good first step.
