Review of Clash of the Titans (2010) by Apostolos M — 08 Jan 2013
Let's talk 'Clash of the Titans'. It wasn't as terrible as some of the reviews have made it out to be, but it definitely wasn't good. Sam Worthington did an excellent job in 'Avatar', but he was playing a soldier which didn't seem like much of a stretch. He didn't have the strength as an actor to hold 'Clash of the Titans' up and he showed little emotion as Perseus, son of Zeus. He was awful, to be honest. His face seemed like it only had one expression and his accent kept sneaking back to Australian. Liam Neeson was Zeus and he was marginally better but the acting highlight was probably Ralph Fiennes as Hades. I guess all his practise as Voldemort in the Harry Potter films gave him more of an other-wordly presence than his castmates.
The problem I have with 3D is that when it comes to fast-paced action scenes it is sometimes hard to focus. In slow-motion panning shots such as those used in Avatar, it's incredible. The depth of the shots is really highlighted and you feel as though you are there. But 'Clash of the Titans' was very fast and I found myself straining to focus on characters as the screen turned into a blur. Maybe that's just me, I don't know. In it's defence, Titans is less than 2 hours long so not as much of a commitment as many other 3D films and it held my attention for that entire time. I wouldn't recommend seeing it at the cinema unless you are enjoying Gold Class, wine, chocolate cake and comfortable reclining chairs.
