Review of CJ7 (2008) by Ben W — 26 Jul 2008
It's genuinely funny and touching. The performers all do a great job, even when they tempt the overacting label. On the surface it appears to be a kids movie and would be so in full were it not for a suddenly tragic and heart-wrenching sequence near the end.
Things end on a predictable high note, but the realism of the turn is almost too startling. I also had trouble reconciling the main character and alien's relationship, as well as said alien's willingness to help our "heroes," since the bond between them didn't seem to be very well developed.
Except for these complaints, I very much enjoyed myself. The humor IS very well developed and runs the gamut from adorable to zany. Although it relies heavily on CGI, it's the performance-based, rather than dialogue-based humor that provides the bulk of the laughs.
Most importantly, it's fun--despite the jolt dealt to viewers towards the end.
