Review of City of the Living Dead (1980) by Amanda B — 16 Aug 2007
Wow! This film is quite an experience. Of all of Fulci's zombie films this is the most incoherent, and that's quite an achievement, but as some commentators have noted, it works in the context of the alternative reality created by the opening of the gates of hell.
.. Fulci's zombies aren't just drooling corpses, they are more like conduits of Lovecraftian evil that doesn't obey rational order, which is much more disturbing. There are some pretty spectacular set-pieces, some really terrible dubbing, and a 'What was all THAT about?' ending.
