Review of City of Men (2007) by Ty H — 03 Jul 2008
Loved it.
If you haven't seen the show City of Men, you can probably skip this film. as a fan of that show, I had a lot invested in the characters Acerola and Larenjinha and their story. it was nice to get an update, but that's all that it really was. their story wasn't tied up. not a lot was resolved. maybe that means there are more stories to come? sure hope so.
As it's been said, don't expect anywhere near the brilliance of City of God. but it's still quite good. sad that they must be compared, but it's inevitable. also, don't expect the graphic violence of City of God, though there is definitely some violence and it does well to showcase the favelas of Rio. places that need much more attention.
Again, more of a film for the fans and not the clueless. but, if you're interested, check out the show, get caught up, and finish it out with this little gem.
