Review of City of Life and Death (2009) by Spyros T — 31 Aug 2011
The subject matter is profound, the acting is top-notch, the cinematography is excellent, however, the pacing is deliberately slow to match the mood of the film, making me wonder some time how long I had to suffer through.
At some points it barely avoids the trap of becoming a nationalistic propaganda or torture porn film. Despite that, the artistic part of the film is excellent, the black and white cinematography works brilliantly and enhances the moon of the film.
The use of colour would have weakened the film very much. Overall a very unpleasant to watch film that depicts the horror and absurdity of war.
