Review of City of God (2002) by Rob R — 30 Jul 2011
While it took me about three times to finally make it through the movie, I have to admit that "City of God" is at the forefront of 21st century cinema for its cinematography, direction, and novelistic storytelling.
I struggled with the first half of the film because the frantic pacing and dark, washed-out shots often made it difficult for me to keep track of characters and who was speaking, but it pays off as things start to come full-circle in the last half.
Truly a masterpiece of sociopolitical film-making.
