Review of City of God (2002) by Janis A — 29 Mar 2012
From the impact it has on the viewer, the movie deserved 4 ,5 stars, but I had take a half star away because of the chaotic narration. First, you think the movie is about Rockets brother, then it is about Rocket himself, then about several gangsters, then about Rocket again....enough to make you dizzy.
But. The story, told from the eyes of a inquiring, canny and sensible boy named rocket, keeps you hooked from the start. its freshness of style and camera-handling is breathtaking, there are some of the best shots I have ever seen! some characters ar so cruel, it gave me the creeps...the depiction of the gang-wars in Rio de janeiro are a perfect mixture of thriller, drama and fairy-tale...a gret brasilian movie from a great director.
