Review of City of God (2002) by Charles R — 13 Jan 2013
Life in the Rio favelas, magnified thru the lens of an aspiring photo-journalist. Throughout the movie I was completely baffled as to how directors Meirelles and Lund were able to capture such a unflinching portrayal of the despicable characters without dragging the film into shoxploitation.
Some scenes are overwhelmingly REAL in every visceral way - please be warned, this is not for children or sensitive adults. However, for the less squeamish, this highly original film will transport you as completely as any other foreign film centering around Rio can.
