Review of City of God (2002) by Adrian V — 02 Jun 2013
A great analysis of personal motives in the midst of poverty and the ongoing crime that occurs within the Cidade de Deus (City of God) slum of Rio de Janeiro, Fernando Meirelles' violent crime drama has a lot of character, heart, and visceral action to satisfy a viewer. Complete with expert screenwriting, authentic performances straight out of an Italian Neorealist film, and an unflinching portrayal of the violence that categorizes the Cidade from its humble beginnings in the '60s to the mass terror of the '80s.
Flashy, yes - very flashy in its presentation - but what else do you expect? This is a film directly from the eyes of a photographer (albeit a fictional photographer) who views everything like the events of a film.
