A triumph of non-linear storytelling. Many early scenes in the narrative are presented as comic fragments cleverly out of sequence, then brutally fleshed out as the story unfolds.
Just as the desperate Rochina and Santa Teresa favelas have climbed dangerously skyward, Rio de Janeiro's drug wars have escalated to extremes which defy intervention. As the film closes, we overhear the plans of the city's new, youthful stewards of the cycle of poverty and violence as they plot their way down a dark ally-way. We are introduced to the next generation of hopelessness.
