Review of City of God (2002) by Ernesto J. M — 26 Jun 2014
(Sorry for my bad english) Looks like Scorsese has a foreign rival with beautiful skills. The visuals and staging (quick-cutting and a mobile, hand-held camera) are genuine, deserving (by far) their oscar nominations (best editing, best cinematography).
All the characters and situations are limited (and unlimited) to the City of God, which looks like a character by itself. Because the gang death rate is so high, even the leaders tend to be surprisingly young, and life has no value except when you are taking it.
There is an astonishing sequence when a victorious gang leader is killed in a way he least expects, by the last person he would have expected, and we see that essentially he has been killed not by a person but by the culture of crime.
Even if you don´t enjoy mafia films, i´m sure you will like this one.
