"Cidade de Deus" is a gritty, unapologetically violent and excellently stylized film. The action is delirious and fast-paced and there are scenes that pack an enormous emotional punch, thanks to both the believable characters and, once again, the stylization.
The movie succeeds in emphasizing the meaninglessness of the brutality, leaving us with an ending that's ambiguous for the survivors of the slum; they are virtually all teenagers and children, completely desensitized to killing and likely to be killed themselves in the future.
A bold and unbridled masterpiece.
