Review of City of Ember (2008) by Chelsea B — 22 Apr 2011
As far as some people's criticism towards the movie goes - such as peoples problem with the puzzle not being hard enough, you have to remember that the people who designed the puzzles wanted humanity to survive, so they were designed so that anyone could solve them. Along with that, they made sure that people would not escape too soon by keeping the escape plan safe and secret. I would be interested to see if there was an extended version, because it did seem like they rushed through a few points in the movie - although nothing so big that it became a problem. I really thought this movie was great, I reminded me of the game Fallout quite a bit. It was (as many people have noted) visually freakin' sweet. The plot is however just as interesting in my opinion, just don't expect to be spoon fed everything. You have to think about it a little, guys!
I also wanted to comment on peoples' criticism that they couldn't tell if this movie was meant for adults or for children - there are plenty of other great sources of entertainment like that, like the Simpsons (maybe not everyone's first choice), but my point is that shouldn't matter! Why not just decide if you liked it or not, rather than if it was specifically written for your age group or not? :X.
To sum everything up, I really liked this movie and I think most people's criticisms can be easily countered if you just give the movie a bit more thought (maybe just more than you originally gave it credit for?).
On a side note, who here knew that this book was written by the same person who wrote Amelie? ^.^!!
