I saw this movie a couple years ago and enjoyed it. Then recently I read the book, so I decided to watch the movie again. Unfortunately, this was a bad decision.
While the movie holds its own quite well, it seems as if the entire story has been rewritten, leaving only a few key characters and basic ideas in place from the book. For example: there are no giant bugs in the book. Nor was there an answering machine tape. And Lina's father didn't die trying to escape Ember. The list goes on.
Aside from some shoddy special effects (if only they had't blow the budget on the CGI bugs...), the production values are pretty solid. So, this is good for what it is, but a disappointing adaptation.
