Review of City of Ember (2008) by F A — 23 Sep 2009
Ok, I read the book, so there may be an element of bias here, but I thought the movie could have been alot better. I will, however start with what I liked.
1. the acting... saoirse ronan and harry treadaway are great in this flick.
2. set design and costume design are top notch, fantastically realised and everything I had hoped ember would look like.
What surprising bogged the movie down was the plot. there were alot of details in the book that helped capture what life in ember was really like, and how little they knew having lived underground. for example in the book they had no idea what a candle was, much less a boat. all that is missing from the film. the addition of giant animals seems random as well. bill murray is underused, and over all the film is slightly rushed. however its still worth a view on a lazy sunday or quiet friday night in.
