Review of City of Ember (2008) by Andrew C — 11 Dec 2009
A beautifully designed film with immersive sets and functional-looking costumes, this wastes actors like Robbins, Landau and Murray in thankless roles, and gets more muddled as it goes, which is some achievement for a film that pretty much gives up its twist in the first scene.
The limp finale fails to satisfy; in fact it fails to answer the obvious questions: why were the insects and moles gigantic in the city, but normal-sized above ground, and why was the evacuation sequence hideously and obscurely over-designed to look like a video game?
