Review of City Lights (2014) by Michael C — 28 Jan 2009
Widely considered one of the first great comedic romance films, and it still holds up as one of the finest. There is a lot of love and heart in this film, and the fact that it is effectively portrayed using no dialogue and all visuals is even more astounding.
Chaplin is well-known as an entertaining and funny filmmaker and performer, but his work also could have a great deal of depth as well, and it is a shame that the silent aspect of many of his pictures prevents many from experiencing the considerable joys and merits of his work.
The last scene in particular is better acted than the majority of romance films I've scene.
