Review of City Lights (2014) by Jeff L — 05 Jul 2012
Chaplin's silent masterpiece magically juxtaposes humor with topics that seem as disparate from laughter as Michael Bay is to Hitchcock--specifically subjects like alcoholism, blindness, and suicide.
Onscreen, The tramp is a comedic delight, but Chaplin's ability to elicit emotional bliss perhaps outshines even his comedic prowess. A truly charming film, and surely (as has been stated before by people other than myself) one of the best endings of all time.
