Review of City Lights (1931) by Mitchell W — 30 Jan 2008
A brilliant comedian, possibly the best, Chaplin's talents as a filmmaker have often been debated. Visually, his compositions can be prosaic and even crude, and like Spielberg, he can be overly-sentimental.
With "City Lights," I think he outdid himself. His best picture, it's virtually perfect, and the final scene is absolutely heartbreaking. On paper, it flirts with saccharinity, but on film, it cuts deep.
