Review of City Lights (1931) by Gregory W — 01 Aug 2008
Charlie Chaplin's masterpiece in every way. Deep plot, brilliant characters, ingenious direction, great acting (not only from Chaplin!), wonderful music/sound score, and downright hilarious comedy.
The introduction scene and conclusion scene both rank among the best I've ever seen, and there are countless moments of pure joy in between (the initial party, the boxing match, and the police chase inside the mansion are only a few of my favorite parts).
It's paced perfectly for a silent film. One of the few romantic films that genuinely touched me. I think that it's a crime that classic silent films like this are not noticed by most people today.
