Review of City Lights (1931) by Aj S — 21 May 2009
One of the greatest Chaplin films. Charlie Chaplin is such a lovable iconic comedian, his physical comedy is flawless, but his performance (even in silent) has a sentimentality that some people my age today wont see very well, unless they took a class on him.
The story is truly a beautiful think, Boy Meets (Blind) Girl, Boy falls for her, and boy does everything he can to win her over. One of my favorite bits in the film is the boxing scene, personally I can't imagine any other way that could've been choreographed.
This definitely one of my favorite Chaplin's films (next to "The Great Dictator"). And the silent quality of this movie makes it even better than a talkie and I admire Chaplin to stick with silent all the way till he gets to "The Great Dictator".
