Review of City Lights (1931) by Ryan V — 20 Mar 2012
The Little Tramp (Charlie Chaplin) befriends a drunken magnate (Harry Myers) while falling in love with a blind flower girl (Virginia Cherrill). A series of odd coincidences result in the flower girl believing that the Tramp is a millionaire who can restore her sight.
Most of City Lights is an assortment of the sight gags that Chaplin is renowned for, but what really makes this film shine is its famous and oft-imitated ending. I thought that I would be unfazed by the last five minutes of this movie since everyone told me that it would hit me directly in the heart.
But no, the compassionate beauty of that final exchange struck me in ways that few movies can ever manage to accomplish.
