Review of City Lights (1931) by Don E — 06 Jan 2014
People who avoid silent movies could do themselves a favor by allowing 81 minutes for this comedy filled with belly laughs and pathos. Although there is a continuing story, Charlie Chaplin's Little Tramp performs many skits that could be cut into a number of one-reelers.
He's a dancer, a boxer, a sanitation worker, a hero, a chump, a Samaritan, and always enchanting. Even considering "Modern Times" and "The Gold Rush," it is arguably his silent masterpiece.
