Review of City Lights (1931) by Daniel A — 18 Jan 2012
A delightful silent classic from the master himself, Charlie Chaplin. City Lights worked best for me as a comedy, with Chaplin's slapstick routine rarely better than it is here; the opening scene on the monument is laugh-out-loud hilarious no matter how many times you watch.
However the dramatic side of the plot, involving the romance with the blind flower girl was less effective. The bond between these two characters never really worked for me, though the story is undeniably a sweet one.
It's not as great as The Kid, for example, but still a mighty work from The Little Tramp.
