Review of City Island (2009) by Manny C — 19 Oct 2010
City Island is set in a small fishing community in the Bronx, largely populated by Italian-Americans. It's also warm and very hilarious, a movie about family members and their secrets. Writer-director Raymond De Felitta tells his story without being showy, but he also has a gift for charming humor and one-liners laced with real human feeling.
Andy Garcia is amazing as Vince Rizzo, a prison guard (though he prefers to be called corrections officer) whose wife, Joyce (Julianna Margulies at her sexiest) believes he's having an affair. The truth is Vince is sneaking off to the city taking acting lessons under the tutelage of a deadpan hilarious Alan Arkin.
Garcia shows a comic gift seldom seen, it's a wonderful turn. City Island comes as one of the few movies of 2010 to numb the pain of Holywood stupid. It can get a bit oversentimental, but so what.
It's heart is in the right place, and it gives us a good time.
