Review of City by the Sea (2002) by Zach M — 12 Jun 2008
Well, De Niro had a bad dad, and he himself is a bad dad, whose son is a junkie with a kid for whom he in turn is a bad dad. De Niro is also a cop, who has to chase his own kid for murder. Yeah. That's the plot.
Only it never catches the wind beneath its wings. It's pretty sterile, considering the fact about the one piece of shit of a city it takes place in, the Long Beach. As the character of De Niro puts it: "It's like the Serbian army drove thru here".
And in the end he delivers a heart-felt (Oscar nomination worthy?) speech about the generations and thier mistakes and the second change. Didn't make me weep. Nor did this movie move me one way or another.
It just consumed 109 minutes out of my life.
