Review of Citizen Kane (1941) by Kenneth H — 16 Mar 2014
Greatest movie ever? I think not. It does have an interesting story and a richly developed character in Charles Foster Kane, capably brought to life by Orson Welles. The movie has an engaging story structure that starts off with a hook - "Rosebud..." - and uses it to lead you through Kane's life, until everything ties up nicely at the end.
The movie does seem to try to say that true quality of life comes not from material wealth or superficial adulation but from loving interpersonal relationships and inner contentment, which is as clichéd as movie pablum gets. All in all it's a good movie, but not the greatest one I've ever seen.
