Review of Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away (2012) by Brittany R — 27 Dec 2012
Amazing and unique points of view for seeing Cirque-style action are somewhat marred by too frequent editing cuts and the parring down of the acts to essentials.
While the 3D is sharp and the cinematographer works hard to keep the entire frame in focus at once, there are some choices in how to film this spectacle that don't quite work. The slo-mo is very nice and used at the right points, but to get back on the musical track for the piece, parts of the act need to be cut-out, which is occasionally problematic.
The performances are nearly all from existing shows. O at the Bellagio, Love (the Beatles show) and Ka are featured very heavily. So if you have seen these shows, you'll appreciate the fast editing and unique views. But if you are new to these performances, it all goes by so fast that it occasionally feels like a preview for the live show and not a complete performance. Especially with a run time under two hours.
So, a mixed review. Gorgeous, especially in the opportunity to see costumes and makeup really closely. But clipped and over-edited for many newcomers and a repeat of existing work for longtime fans of Cirque Du Soleil. But, at least these aren't $60-$100 tickets, right?
