Review of Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant (2009) by Rosz C — 29 Jul 2010
Cirque du Freak: The Vampireâ??s Assistant is a quirky movie. It shares something with the likes of Buffy and Angel in the script, but subtly fails to be as darkly amusing. Instead it falls more into the adolescent humour area (but not as much as the first Buffy movie), while also being quite dark. The casting of John C Reilly as the vampire is intriguing, but I donâ??t think the delivery of his lines is quite right (which may be a failing of the directing rather than the acting) and he never really seems at home in the character. Nevertheless, I enjoyed it and am looking forward to the next installment.
It also has the most beautiful sets, costumes and creatures and the other Cirque du Freak members are great. Salma Hayek is fabulous and Ray Stevenson, who is always excellent, looks like he is having a ball as Murlough.
