Despite my low rating, it was better than I thought it would be. Vampires have been done to death (ha ha ), yet movies about them are being churned out at a record pace. "Cirque du Freak" adds nothing new to the genre despite trying REALLY hard to do so.

You have two friends who sneak off and watch a freak show. One of them recognizes the main act as an actual vampire. Wanting to be a vampire himself, boy #2 sneaks backstage and demands to be made into one. It is determined that he has "bad blood" and the vampire refuses. Boy #1 had also found his way backstage to try and boost the vampire's pet spider and sees the entire exchange. After an accident that leaves Boy #2 paralyzed and dying, Boy #1 agrees to become a vampire to save his life.

Honestly, the books were only average is it is and I never really thought they'd translate well on the big screen. A lot of that is the script which seemed to take bits and pieces of the book series and cram them into one movie. The lead actor, Chris Massoglia, was also horrid and stiff ... even for a vampire. On a positive note, Reilly actually pulled off playing a vampire really well. When I heard he had been cast for the part I was dubious, but I ended up pleasantly surprised.

10 Scale Rating: 4.0 ...
