Review of Circumstance (2011) by Shelby B — 06 Jun 2011
A classic story of forbidden love, in the context of both overt oppression (state/surveillance and cultural/religious), homophobia, and male power, all handled very well. This had a little bit of a clumsy start, but this is the director's first feature film.
As it came together later, it got really good, so given that context I forgive a little bit of clunkiness. I think it was important that this is not a film that demonizes Islam or religious fundamentalism, something actor Reza Sixo Safai pointed out in Q&A.
It's really more about making difficult choices in the context of power, where it's hard to point a finger at one thing in particular, and women, as is often the case around the world, bear the often lonely burden of making impossible choices.
This was a gorgeously shot and visually sexy film, reminiscent of Wong Kar Wai, but more sensually overt. The acting was excellent and the story solid. I hope this director makes more films and continues to perfect her craft, as this was a very impressive first feature.
Definitely recommended.
